ELIZABETH SIMCOE was 25 when she arrived for the first time in Upper Canada in mid-1792. She and her family stayed at Kingston for about three weeks, on their way to visit the strategically pivotal fortifications at Niagara. Kingston was then a military and naval station, the most important town west of Montreal -- consisting, Simcoe estimated in her diary, of about 50 buildings, one of them stone, the rest wood. This village was a far cry from the comparatively grand town of Quebec, where the Simcoes had spent the previous seven months; and Quebec was in turn much less sophisticated than the London of the day, where, just before leaving, the Simcoes had shopped for their five-year adventure in Canada. Aboard the frigate Triton they made the six-week voyage from Weymouth, England, near their estate at Wolford, Devonshire, arriving in Quebec on 11 November 1791. While in Kingston, Simcoe entered the following characteristic observations and remark in her diary:
